World's Largest Container Ship Makes Historic Call at India's Vizhinjam Port

In a landmark event for India's maritime sector, the world's largest container ship, MSC Irina, docked at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala on Monday morning. The vessel, which has the largest carrying capacity on the planet, was greeted with a traditional water salute upon its arrival at 8 am. This historic docking at the port, which was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi just last month, highlights a pivotal moment in the development of India's deepwater port ecosystem.

Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and SEZ, lauded the achievement. "Proud to welcome MSC Irina, the world’s largest container ship with a capacity of 24,346 TEUs, to our Vizhinjam Port," he posted, sharing photos of the event. "This marks the vessel's maiden visit to South Asian shores, making it a milestone not just for Vizhinham but for India’s emergence as a key player in global transshipment. A bold vision now in motion.” The ship was expected to remain berthed at the port for approximately 24 hours.

About the MSC Irina

Launched in March 2023, the MSC Irina is an engineering marvel designed for the crucial transportation route between Asia and Europe. It embarked on its maiden voyage in April of the same year.

  • Capacity: The vessel boasts a staggering carrying capacity of 24,346 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), which is 150 TEUs more than its predecessor, the OOCL Spain. Its innovative design allows for containers to be stacked up to 26 tiers high.
  • Eco-Friendly Design: In line with modern environmental standards, the MSC Irina incorporates advanced energy-efficient technologies. These innovations help reduce its carbon emissions by up to 4%, significantly minimizing its environmental footprint while maintaining high operational efficiency.

The arrival of a vessel of this magnitude and technological sophistication at Vizhinjam is a testament to the port's state-of-the-art infrastructure and deep draft, which are essential for accommodating such large ships.

This event is more than just a port of call; it represents a significant step forward in India's journey to become a major international transshipment hub. The ability to service the world's largest container ships enhances the country's logistical capabilities, potentially reducing the reliance on foreign ports for sending and receiving large cargo consignments. It also aligns with global trends towards greener shipping practices, setting a new benchmark for sustainability and innovation in the Indian maritime industry. The successful docking of the MSC Irina at Vizhinjam is a clear and powerful signal of India's readiness to play a larger and more influential role in the future of global maritime trade.
