Bhubaneswar, May 24: Union Education Minister and Sambalpur MP Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday distributed financial assistance to Kendu (Tendu) leaf workers during a programme held at Sambalpur University Auditorium. The initiative aims to uplift the lives of thousands engaged in forest-based livelihoods, particularly in western Odisha.

Addressing the gathering, Pradhan reiterated the BJP-led "double-engine" government’s commitment to supporting communities dependent on forest produce. Nearly 10 lakh Tendu leaf pluckers live in western Odisha. Many more are involved in ‘beedi’ production and other forest-based industries. The state government has consistently stood by them, and now, it’s our responsibility to further empower them. These workers played a key role in shaping the mandate, and our double-engine government will ensure their welfare,” Pradhan said.

Earlier in the day, the Union Minister inaugurated the sub-regional conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), titled Saksham-2025, also held in Sambalpur. Welcoming delegates and Chartered Accountants from across the country, he emphasized the significance of the event's theme, “Informing Professionals – Enabling Progress”, in connecting national talent with growth opportunities.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Pradhan wrote: “Today, I had the privilege of addressing ICAI’s sub-regional conference ‘Saksham-2025’ in Sambalpur. I welcome all Chartered Accountants and participants to this meaningful dialogue. The theme aims to bridge the gap between professional knowledge and national progress.”
