New Delhi, June 14: The annual Raja Festival, a cherished traditional celebration of Odisha, will not be observed at the Rashtrapati Bhavan this year. President Droupadi Murmu, who had enthusiastically hosted the festival over the past two years, has decided to cancel the celebrations as a mark of respect for the victims of the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.

Known for its vibrant festivities, the Raja Festival at the Rashtrapati Bhavan had become a platform to showcase Odisha's rich cultural heritage. Previous celebrations featured traditional swings, an array of Odia delicacies including pithas (rice cakes), and participation from numerous members of the Odia diaspora.

However, the tragic aviation accident, which resulted in multiple fatalities, has cast a pall of grief over the nation. Deeply moved by the incident, President Murmu has expressed profound sorrow and extended her condolences to the bereaved families. In light of the national mourning, she has opted to forgo the festivities this year.

In solidarity, the Odisha government has also announced the cancellation of the Raja Mahotsav scheduled to be held at Odisha Bhavan in New Delhi.

Officials have stated that the decision reflects the collective grief of the nation and is intended to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the crash.
