New Delhi, May 11: Ahead of taking oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, Justice B.R. Gavai expressed sorrow over the Pahalgam terror attack, stating that the Supreme Court shares the nation's grief.
He recalled observing a two-minute silence for the victims, affirming the judiciary's emotional connection to national tragedies.
Proud to become the country's first Buddhist CJI, Justice Gavai emphasized his inclusive faith and respect for all religions. Responding to concerns of judicial overreach, he stressed that the Constitution remains supreme, citing the landmark Kesavananda Bharati judgment.
Rejecting the idea of war, he referred to the ongoing Ukraine conflict as a lesson in futility. Justice Gavai also ruled out any political role post-retirement, stating such posts are below the CJI in protocol.
He advocated for asset declarations by High Court judges to enhance transparency.
