Odisha Vigilance nabs four in Rs 20 Lakh NREGS fund misappropriation in Rayagada

The action follows a detailed verification conducted by Vigilance on allegations that funds were misappropriated without actual excavation of farm ponds in the region. During the probe, it was revealed that 23 farm ponds, listed as completed in different villages of Kashipur, were never excavated

Rayagada, May 22: Odisha Vigilance has apprehended four government officials in connection with the alleged embezzlement of over 20 lakh under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Kashipur block of Rayagada district.

The action follows a detailed verification conducted by Vigilance on allegations that funds were misappropriated without actual excavation of farm ponds in the region. During the probe, it was revealed that 23 farm ponds, listed as completed in different villages of Kashipur, were never excavated.

The officials arrested have been identified as, Rajendra Nath Naik, Assistant Project Director-cum-Project Implementing Agency (APD-cum-PIA), Class-I Officer, Jogendra Khosla, Soil Conservation Overseer, Deepak Kumar Sahoo, Soil Conservation Overseer, Srikumar Nayak, Soil Conservation Extension Worker. All four were working under the Office of the Project Director, Watershed, Rayagada.

According to Vigilance sources, the accused siphoned off the scheme funds by routing payments through job card holders under NREGS, and subsequently withdrew the money. The fraudulent transactions are currently under further scrutiny.

Officials believe the number of fake or unexcavated farm ponds may increase, as several of the listed sites are located in remote and forested parts of Kashipur block. Vigilance teams are continuing ground verification in these areas.

Following the investigation, a case has been registered at Koraput Vigilance Police Station under Case No. 20 dated 21.05.2025 against the accused.

The probe is ongoing, and further reports are awaited.
