Bhubaneswar, June 11: In a bid to tackle urban air pollution and promote environmental sustainability, the Odisha government is set to launch a large-scale tulsi (holy basil) plantation drive near traffic signals across the state.

The initiative, spearheaded by Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, is part of a broader Green Urban Initiative aimed at improving air quality in densely populated areas.

Scheduled to begin on June 12, the campaign coincides with the first anniversary of the current state government. Thousands of tulsi saplings will be planted simultaneously across all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), with the goal of enhancing oxygen levels and offering cleaner air to commuters waiting at busy intersections.

“Tulsi holds both cultural and medicinal value. It is known for its ability to purify the air, making it an ideal choice for urban settings, especially near traffic-heavy zones,” said Minister Mahapatra during the announcement. He added that the campaign is a step towards building a greener and healthier Odisha.

In addition to tulsi, other oxygen-rich and eco-friendly plants like amla, moringa, and various fruit-bearing trees will also be planted to enrich urban green cover and support biodiversity.

This greening effort also aligns with the national campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which encourages citizens to plant trees in honour of their mothers. Odisha’s drive aims to resonate with this emotional appeal, while simultaneously addressing pressing environmental concerns.

The initiative has received positive responses from local authorities and is expected to become a model for other states seeking to integrate traditional ecological practices into modern urban planning.
