Odisha CM Mohan Majhi, Naveen Patnaik, congratulate Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on UN Sasakawa Award

Bhubaneswar, June 9: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik congratulated Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, DG of IMD, for receiving the prestigious UN Sasakawa Award 2025 for Disaster Risk Reduction.

CM Majhi took to X and wrote, “Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to the Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department, Shri Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, on being awarded the prestigious UN Sasakawa Prize – 2025. Your accurate assessments during natural disasters have helped save countless precious lives. As an Odia, your achievement is a matter of pride and honour for both the state and the country. I wish you continued success.”

CM Majhi praised Dr Mohapatra for his accurate disaster predictions, calling his achievement a proud moment for Odisha and India. Naveen Patnaik also lauded his contribution in reducing cyclone fatalities across the Indian Ocean region.

Known as the ‘Cyclone Man of India’, Dr Mohapatra, a native of Bhadrak, received the award at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva. He also serves as a vice-president of the World Meteorological Organization.

Earlier this year, he was honoured by the American Meteorological Society for his outstanding service.
