New Delhi, June 11: In the wake of a steady uptick in COVID-19 cases across the country, the Union Government mandated an RT-PCR test for ministers before meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The decision comes at a time when the active COVID-19 cases in India crossed the 7,000 mark.
As per reports, about 70 BJP leaders from Delhi including the Chief Minister, MPs, and MLAs are expected to meet PM Modi at his residence this evening. PM Modi has invited them for dinner at 7:30 PM following the party's recent win in the Delhi Assembly elections.
The Union Health Ministry reported that India recorded 306 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths in the last 24 hours. Kerala reported three of these deaths, while Karnataka had two and Maharashtra one.
Kerala witnessed highest single-day jump, with 170 new infections and over 2,200 active cases. Gujarat reported 114 new cases and has 1,223 active cases. Karnataka recorded 100 new cases and has 459 active cases. Delhi saw 66 fresh cases, taking its total active cases to 757.
Health experts believe the current rise in infections may be linked to new COVID-19 variants such as LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1.
Although there is no national advisory yet, some states have taken precautions. The Delhi government has asked hospitals to be ready with beds, oxygen, and medicine. Karnataka has urged people to stay alert and follow health guidelines.
The RT-PCR test requirement for those meeting PM Modi is being seen as a precaution to keep everyone safe amid the growing number of cases.
